What does a 168 foot serpent, a space station, and Canada’s largest integrated energy company have in common? It turns out a lot! Suncor was once again a proud supporter of, Beakerhead, an annual five day Calgary event which brings together science, engineering and art to spark new collaborations and ignite imaginations.

To show our support, Suncor employees took part in a number of events. During the launch, Gary Bunio, general manager, strategic technology, Suncor, brought greetings on behalf of the company while building a giant s’more. In true Beakerhead fashion, the tower was transformed into a space station with the help of artist collective Humble Wonder; and the use of virtual reality goggles.

«We know how important innovation can be to creating change and social progress. So much so, that when we support communities it’s not just about funding a project, it’s about partnerships and thinking about possibilities together,» said Mark. «Not only is Beakerhead a great way to promote innovation, but also an important way to support community.»

About 60 Suncor volunteers along with their friends and family also volunteered at Beakernight, Beakerhead’s biggest public event. This year, the free open air museum showcased multiple installations, including the fiery Serpent Mother, Rings of Reconciliation, a driveable Tin Fish and so much more.

Megan Abraham, a facilitator for Suncor’s new hire orientation and Beakernight volunteer, said the event was a great way to get involved. «I was part of the welcome crew and it was a fantastic experience. Beakernight is a pretty surreal event. Everywhere you look there are new and interesting collaborations of art and science.»

Mark Becker, VP Fort Hills, echoed those remarks to volunteers at his Beakernight greeting. «At Suncor, technology and innovation are a part of our DNA it’s what allowed us to be the first company to develop the oil sands. It’s now the creative ideas and working collaboratively that enable us to innovate, and continually improve our business while reducing our footprint in the oil sands.»

The Suncor Energy Foundation is a founding partner of Beakerhead, and supports Beakerhead as part of our commitment to engaging citizens, inspiring innovation and building skills and knowledge, key priorities of our community investment strategy.
