Gratitude can be good for you

It is a privilege to be a family doctor, to listen to my patients» stories of overcoming significant ordeals and help guide them in their quest to prevent and treat illness and optimize their (and their family’s) health and wellness.

Over the past 20 years of providing care, it has struck me that the individuals that choose an attitude of gratitude, and forgiveness of circumstances beyond their control, seem to be not only happier, but also enjoy better overall health and wellbeing. There is a lightness and positive energy in their presence behind the exam room door.

Some of my patients express gratitude by just being grateful they have another day to experience life’s ups and downs and to be connected with their loved ones. Others are grateful that they can decrease their medications through better self care choosing to eat more nutritious foods, getting outside in the abundant nature of the Pacific Northwest and prioritizing quality sleep. I refer to this as «owning» their bodies and embracing their personal values. They also have a high degree of awareness of the positive impact of good self care.

Personally, I am most grateful to be a Mom to two wonder filled daughters, to be able to care for my patients with the support of my work teams, to engage in wholehearted friendships, and to be able to participate in outdoor activities in our beautiful Oregon.
